Here I am, chapter 4, several jobs mastered and a dual-wielding, badass Ninja Ramza hitting upwards of 300 in a turn and I'm still getting regularly wiped. Had a bit of a break to play some other things, beat the entirety of Sekiro's bosses and then came back to this game that - to me at least - makes Shadows Die Twice look like Kingdom Hearts III.

You kinda expect things to get a bit easier and it doesn't! I mean seriously, I can't remember any other RPG where I've been so dominated by early stuff that I've felt compelled to grind fifty levels up to put me on a more even keel. I managed to not get save file-fucked by Wiegraf, and despite minor hiccups I was able to reach Chapter 4 mostly by grinding up a storm and getting my five mains to level 50+. BUT I wouldn't have succeeded without Auto-Potion, Lifeline and a constant supply of 99 high-potions amongst other newbie acts of incredibly cautious future-proofing. So I decided to give this legendary game another shot and although I got a good 20 or so hours in (and having fun despite all). I gave up on this game originally when I played it many years ago because the first few battles wiped me: this kind of difficulty happening so early in the game killed my interest utterly.īut now I'm older, wiser, have many RPGs under my belt (including all the original FF's). I've wiped so many times in this game by regular mobs, let alone story battles. It's a superb game that deserved to be up there on all those greatest lists.īut holy fuck, mate. It feels essential to my overall experience and history with the series. It's compulsive, addictive, deep and full of complexities. It's beautiful, charming, incredibly written and animated. Can't remember the last time I was trolled so constantly by a game.
